Custom carpentry: the details to confirm before fabrication

Turn “built-in wardrobe” into a specification you can check.

Custom carpentry is difficult to evaluate from a total length and an attractive rendering. The internal layout, materials and fittings can change both cost and usefulness. Before fabrication begins, make sure the drawings describe what you expect to receive.

Check how you will use the space

Measure the items the cabinet needs to hold. Long clothing, luggage, kitchen equipment and cleaning tools require different openings. Ask for the internal dimensions rather than assuming the external size tells you what fits.

Review door and drawer movement. Check nearby switches, handles, passageways and bed or appliance positions. An elegant cabinet can become awkward if you cannot fully open it in the finished room.

Specify materials and hardware

Ask the firm to identify the boards, finishes, edge treatment, hinges, drawer systems and handles in the agreed price. Confirm which parts a sample represents. A door finish does not tell you the material used inside the cabinet.

Discuss load expectations with the fabricator. Shelves intended for books or heavy kitchen equipment need an appropriate design. Avoid treating a general cabinet description as a technical assurance for every use.

Sign off one final drawing set

Use dated drawings and a material schedule, and make sure revisions replace earlier instructions. Mark outstanding decisions clearly. Do not approve a drawing with missing details just because fabrication is about to start.

Ask how installed work will be checked and how defects will be corrected. Record product warranties and the firm’s workmanship terms separately, since they may cover different issues.

Your next step: open every drawer and door in the plan, mentally fill every compartment, and ask the designer to resolve anything you cannot describe precisely.

General educational guidance. Technical decisions and approval requirements should be assessed for your property by the relevant professionals.
