What contractor credentials can—and cannot—tell you
Check evidence without mistaking a registration for a workmanship guarantee.
A badge is useful only when you know what it means and can check that it belongs to the business you are hiring. Start with the legal entity on the quotation and contract. A trading name, showroom name and registered company name may not be identical.
Check the relevant official records
HDB says owners should engage contractors listed in its Directory of Renovation Contractors for flat renovations. Check the current directory and the requirements relevant to your work. Do not rely solely on a screenshot supplied months ago.
If a firm claims accreditation, verify it with the issuing organisation and ask which entity and scheme it covers. CaseTrust describes its renovation accreditation requirements on its official site. Read the applicable scope and terms rather than assuming all badges offer identical protection.
Separate facts from marketing
A registration confirms a particular status; it does not answer every question about supervision, workmanship or whether a firm suits your project. Ask for examples of similar completed work and a clear description of the team assigned to you.
Treat reviews as one part of the assessment. Look for specific accounts of communication, changes and defect follow-up. A repeated five-star phrase is less informative than a detailed explanation, and no small sample can predict your outcome.
Match the documents
Check that the contract, quotation and payment instructions identify the intended business. If bank details change, verify the request through a known contact before paying. Keep copies of the evidence you checked and the date of your check.
Ask directly about insurance, warranties and any claimed deposit protection. Request documents and read exclusions. If an answer is unclear, resolve it before signing rather than relying on a verbal reassurance.
Your next step: create a short evidence folder for each shortlisted firm. Use it to document checks, not to assign an unsupported “safe” rating.
