Interior designer or contractor: choose the service you actually need
Understand who handles design, coordination and execution before comparing fees.
Homeowners often compare an interior designer with a renovation contractor as if the labels describe identical services. In practice, the work included can vary widely between firms. Ask what the proposed team will deliver rather than relying on the job title.
Decide how much design help you need
If you need help with layouts, storage, materials and a coordinated visual direction, ask about the design deliverables. Will you receive measured drawings, material schedules, revisions and installation details? Clarify which drawings are for discussion and which guide the work.
If your plan is already clear and the changes are limited, a contractor-led service may suit you. You still need accurate specifications and coordination. Simple work does not mean instructions can remain informal.
Identify the person who runs the site
Ask who supervises trades, handles deliveries, checks workmanship and responds to problems. Is your sales contact also your project manager? Who takes over when that person is unavailable? Record the named contacts and communication arrangements.
Discuss whether specialists are appointed directly by you or managed by the firm. Separate appointments can give you control but also create coordination responsibilities. Confirm who resolves clashes between cabinets, electrical points and appliances.
Compare the promised outputs
A proposal should explain what is included in design, management and construction. Ask what happens when you change a layout or material choice, and whether revision fees or schedule changes apply.
Look at relevant completed projects and ask recent customers about communication and follow-through. Good photographs help you assess style, but they do not show how decisions or defects were handled.
Your next step: make a checklist of services you require, then compare firms against it. Choose the arrangement that fits your project and the time you can realistically spend managing it.
General educational guidance. Technical decisions and approval requirements should be assessed for your property by the relevant professionals.
