Plan a kitchen around the way you cook
Choose a workable layout before filling it with cabinets and appliances.
A kitchen that photographs well can still be frustrating during dinner preparation. Before choosing doors and countertops, think through the jobs you do most often: bringing groceries in, washing, preparing, cooking and clearing up.
Test the everyday flow
Mark the fridge, sink, cooking area and main preparation surface on a plan. Imagine two people using the kitchen at once. Can an open drawer block the route? Does the dishwasher door interrupt the passage? Can you set groceries down near the fridge?
Do not treat a popular layout rule as a substitute for your actual room. Doorways, service locations and available space may constrain the design. Discuss proposed changes with the project team and confirm relevant requirements before moving installations.
Select appliances early
Obtain the exact dimensions and installation instructions for the models you intend to buy. Check clearances, ventilation, power, water connections and access for maintenance with the appropriate installers. “Standard oven size” is not enough for a final cabinet drawing.
Plan storage around real items. Deep drawers may suit pots, while frequently used ingredients should be easy to reach. Count small appliances and decide which live on the counter so you leave a useful preparation area.
Review the details at full scale
Use tape or a cardboard outline to picture a proposed island or peninsula in the available space. Check door swings and the positions where people will stand. Ask the designer to explain which measurements have been verified on site.
Before fabrication, review internal layouts, handles, hinges, lighting and service access. A simple cabinet elevation with labelled dimensions is more useful than relying on a perspective rendering alone.
Your next step: list your five most common kitchen activities and test each one against the proposed layout.
General educational guidance. Technical decisions and approval requirements should be assessed for your property by the relevant professionals.
