Lighting and sockets: plan from furniture and daily tasks
Coordinate the electrical plan before surfaces are closed up.
Electrical planning often happens after the visual design, but it should be coordinated with the way you use the room. A socket hidden behind a cabinet or a light that casts a shadow over your worktop can be expensive and inconvenient to revisit.
Place your everyday activities on the plan
Mark the sofa, beds, desks and major appliances. Add the places where you charge devices, vacuum, iron or use small kitchen appliances. Discuss useful socket locations and access with the designer and qualified electrical professional.
Check door swings and switch positions together. Consider how you enter a dark room, move through it at night and turn lights off before bed. Avoid deciding from a blank floor plan with no furniture.
Think in lighting layers
General lighting, task lighting and optional accent lighting serve different purposes. Prioritise the places where you read, prepare food, work or groom. Ask to see samples or demonstrations rather than assuming a product description predicts the result in your home.
Discuss controls, dimming compatibility and replacement access. A concealed fitting can look neat but still needs servicing. Keep the product list and installation instructions available to the project team.
Confirm the technical assessment
The qualified professional should assess loading, circuits, equipment and applicable requirements for the flat. HDB provides guidance for electrical works. Do not use a consumer article to select cable sizes, bypass protection or perform electrical work yourself.
Check the quotation for the number of points and what each charge covers. Ask about relocation, new wiring, accessories, installation and making good so the total reflects the proposed plan.
Your next step: do a room-by-room walkthrough using your furniture plan and ask where each daily activity gets its light and power.
