Renovating with neighbours in mind

Clear notice and a realistic work schedule reduce avoidable friction.

Renovation affects people beyond your front door. Noise, deliveries and debris can interrupt neighbours’ routines and common areas. Planning these details early is part of a well-managed project, not a courtesy to leave until someone complains.

Confirm notice and working restrictions

HDB’s current information asks owners and contractors to notify neighbours within a radius of two units at least five days before renovation begins. It also distinguishes general renovation hours from restricted noisy work. Check the official page and your permit conditions for the exact current restrictions.

Do not assume all drilling or demolition can be scheduled whenever general work is allowed. Ask the contractor to explain which activities fall into the restricted category and how the programme complies.

Make logistics visible

Discuss deliveries, lift protection, movement of materials and debris removal with the contractor and relevant estate contacts. Common areas should not become an informal storage space. Ask who supervises access and cleaning after deliveries.

Give neighbours a useful contact arrangement and a realistic description of the disruptive stages. Avoid promising absolute silence or an exact finish date that the team has not confirmed. If the programme changes significantly, update the people affected.

Respond constructively

If someone raises a concern, record the time and activity, ask the contractor what occurred and check it against the applicable requirements. Keep the conversation factual and avoid sharing workers’ or neighbours’ private details publicly.

If the concern involves safety, blocked access or suspected unauthorised work, use the appropriate official channel. The responsible organisation can advise on the situation; a social-media dispute rarely clarifies technical requirements.

Your next step: add notices, delivery arrangements and debris removal to the project checklist alongside the building works.
